Australian Loan Rejection Statistics

There is no single official โ€˜loan rejection rateโ€™ published in Australia, but survey data from Finder and guidance from the regulator (ASIC's Moneysmart) reveal how common rejection โ€” and fear of rejection โ€” has become. This page brings the available figures together with their sources.

How Common Is Loan Rejection in Australia?

How many Australians are affected by loan rejection?

A Finder survey found that 19% of Australians โ€” around 4 million people โ€” did not apply for a financial product in the past 12 months because they feared being knocked back. About 8% (1.6 million) abandoned a credit card application, and 5% each avoided personal loan and home loan applications.

Fear of rejection is rational: a declined application still records a hard enquiry on your file, which can make the next application harder.

What proportion of Australians have actually been rejected for a loan?

According to Finder's Consumer Sentiment Tracker, about 8% of Australians have been rejected for a personal loan. Of those rejected, 32% cited an unsteady income, 28% cited carrying too much debt, and 28% cited a bad credit score as the reason given.

Note that an official, system-wide rejection rate is not published in Australia; figures come from lender surveys and consumer research rather than a central regulator.

Why Applications Get Declined

What are the main reasons loan applications are declined in Australia?

The most common reasons Australian loan applications are declined are a poor credit history (including defaults and missed payments), insufficient income or serviceability, too much existing debt, too many recent credit enquiries, and an inadequate deposit. Lenders must decline a loan they assess as unaffordable under responsible lending obligations.

Because lenders use automated credit scoring, even one default or a cluster of recent enquiries can trigger an automatic decline at a major bank, while non-bank lenders may assess circumstances case by case. If repeated enquiries are weighing on your file, see our guide to credit enquiry removal.

Your Rights After a Rejection

What can you do if your loan is rejected because of your credit report?

If an Australian lender rejects your application because of your credit report, they must tell you. You are then entitled to request a free copy of your credit report from each credit reporting body โ€” normally available every three months, or sooner if you have recently been declined.

Reviewing the report lets you check for listings that may be incorrect or out of date. Where a default or enquiry breaches the credit reporting rules, it may be challenged under the Privacy Act 1988 โ€” whether grounds exist depends on the individual file. If you are working toward a mortgage, see credit repair for home loan approval.
