Optus Default Removal
Telco defaults catch a lot of Australians by surprise. A post-paid Optus mobile, NBN or device plan is treated as consumer credit for credit reporting โ so an unpaid balance can become a default that sits on your file for five years. The reassuring part: telco defaults are often the most challengeable, because the notice and process rules are strict and not always followed.
Can an Optus Default Be Removed?
An Optus default โ a telco default listed for an unpaid mobile, internet or phone account โ can be removed from your credit file only if it was listed in breach of the credit reporting rules in the Privacy Act 1988. Common grounds include no valid section 21D notice before listing, the wrong amount, a bill that was genuinely in dispute, a default listed while you were in a hardship arrangement, or a listing that resulted from identity theft. A correctly listed default generally stays five years.

Paying a telco default does not remove it. Whether grounds exist depends on the facts on your file. For the wider category, see telco default removal and our Telstra default removal guide.
When Can Optus List a Default?
Telcos are bound by the Telecommunications Consumer Protections (TCP) Code, which sets obligations around billing, credit management and financial hardship, alongside the Privacy Act. If the listing didn't follow these steps, it may not comply.
Optus Hardship and Complaint Pathways
Financial hardship. Under the TCP Code, Optus must have a hardship policy and consider reasonable arrangements. A default listed while a hardship request was on foot can be relevant to a dispute.
Internal complaint, then the TIO. Service and billing complaints go first to Optus, then to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) โ a free, independent scheme.
Credit-reporting disputes. A dispute about a credit listing can be raised with Optus and the credit reporting body, and escalated to the OAIC.
