Australian Credit Score Statistics

This page compiles the most recent publicly reported figures on credit scores in Australia โ€” drawn principally from Equifax's annual Credit Scorecard, alongside the official scoring ranges used by all three Australian bureaus. Every figure is attributed to its source.

The National Average Credit Score

What is the average credit score in Australia?

The national average Equifax credit score in Australia was 864 in 2025 โ€” within the โ€˜Excellentโ€™ band โ€” up three points from 861 in 2024, according to Equifax's Credit Scorecard released in December 2025. Over the year, 52% of Australians improved their score while 23% saw a decline.

Equifax's Scorecard is weighted to represent all Australian adults and draws on an analysis of more than two million credit scores. Because each bureau uses a different scale and method, the same person can hold three different scores at once.

Scores by State and Gender

Which Australian states have the highest and lowest credit scores?

Based on Equifax data (November 2024), the Australian Capital Territory had the highest average credit score at 906, followed by Tasmania (886) and Victoria (885). The lowest averages were in the Northern Territory (834) and Queensland (857). By gender, women averaged 896 versus 882 for men.

State differences are modest relative to the full 0โ€“1,200 scale, and Equifax reported no major outlier across states and territories in its 2025 update.

Bureau Ranges and Score Bands

What is a good credit score in Australia?

On the Equifax scale (0โ€“1,200), a โ€˜goodโ€™ score starts at 661, โ€˜very goodโ€™ at 735, and โ€˜excellentโ€™ at 853. On Experian (0โ€“1,000), โ€˜goodโ€™ starts at 625; on illion (0โ€“1,000), bands differ again. A score below 460 on Equifax is โ€˜below averageโ€™, where most mainstream lending becomes difficult.

Australia's three bureaus โ€” Equifax, Experian and illion โ€” each hold different data and apply different algorithms, so checking all three before a major application is sensible.

Why have Australian credit scores risen over time?

Australian credit scores have trended upward largely because of Comprehensive Credit Reporting (CCR), introduced in March 2018, which allows positive repayment behaviour to count toward a score rather than only negative events. From 10 June 2025, Buy Now Pay Later activity also became reportable under the National Consumer Credit Protection Act.

Because positive history now lifts scores, consistent on-time payments actively help โ€” while a single default can still drop a score by 100โ€“200 points. If a default on your file may have been listed incorrectly, see our guide to default removal in Australia.
