Credit Score Basics: How to Check Your Credit Report in Australia (Free)

Understanding your credit score is the first step to financial freedom. Here's everything you need to know.

Key Takeaway

You can get free credit reports directly from Australia's three credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and illion. Understanding your credit score is the first step to financial freedom, and if you find errors or defaults on your report, you have the legal right to challenge them.

Introduction

You've probably heard people mention checking their credit report at annualcreditreport.com β€” it's the free credit report site Americans use. But if you're in Australia and you've typed "annualcreditreport.com Australia" into Google, you've likely come up empty-handed.

That's because Australia has its own system, and honestly? It's actually better.

At Australian Credit Solutions, we've helped over 5,000 Australians understand, access, and clean up their credit files. As Australia's award-winning credit repair specialists (recognised three years running in 2022, 2023, and 2024) and ASIC Licensed (ACL 532003), we know exactly how confusing credit reports can be β€” and how much damage a misunderstood or error-filled credit file can cause.

Understanding Credit Scores: What's the Big Deal?

Your credit score is essentially a number that tells lenders how risky it would be to lend you money. The higher your score, the more trustworthy you appear β€” and the better your chances of getting approved for home loans, car finance, credit cards, and personal loans.

But here's something most Aussies don't realise: you don't have just one credit score. You actually have three.

That's because Australia has three main credit bureaus β€” Equifax, Experian, and illion β€” and each one calculates your score differently using their own methods and scales.

Equifax (0 to 1,200)

Equifax uses the widest scale. A score above 622 is considered "Good."

Experian (0 to 1,000)

On Experian's scale, you'll want to be above 700 for a "Good" rating.

illion (0 to 1,000)

illion also uses a 0 to 1,000 scale, where 700+ is considered "Good."

So if you check your score through one service and it's 650, then check through another and it's 720, you haven't made a mistake β€” you're just seeing different scales from different bureaus.

How to Check Your Credit Report (Free)

Unlike the US, where there's one central site, Australia lets you get free reports directly from each bureau:

  • Equifax β€” Visit equifax.com.au and request your free report
  • Experian β€” Visit experian.com.au to access your free report
  • illion β€” Visit illion.com.au for your free credit file

You're entitled to one free report from each bureau per year. We recommend checking all three, as they may have different information.

Expert Tip from Elisa Rothschild:

"I always recommend checking your credit file 3-6 months before any major finance application. This gives you time to spot and fix any errors before they cause a rejection."

What's Actually on Your Credit Report?

Your credit file contains more information than most people realise:

  • Personal Information β€” Name, date of birth, addresses, employer details
  • Credit Enquiries β€” Every time you apply for credit, it's recorded
  • Credit Accounts β€” Your credit cards, loans, and their limits
  • Repayment History β€” Whether you've paid on time over the past 2 years
  • Defaults β€” Unpaid debts over $150 that were 60+ days overdue
  • Court Judgments β€” Money owed through court orders
  • Bankruptcy Information β€” If applicable
  • Serious Credit Infringements β€” Debts where you've "skipped" without paying

What If You Find Errors or Problems?

Under the Privacy Act 1988, you have the right to challenge any information on your credit file that's incorrect or improperly listed.

For simple errors (wrong address, incorrect personal details), contact the bureau directly.

For defaults or serious listings, the challenge process is more complex. Credit providers must follow strict procedures before listing negative information. If they didn't follow these rules, the listing may be removable β€” even if the underlying debt was real.

Warning

Don't ignore problems on your credit file hoping they'll go away. Defaults stay for 5-7 years. The sooner you address issues, the sooner you can start rebuilding.
